Yeah, I know. Some would find other sections to post their homework problems in. But deleting this section would go a long way to reduce the number of cheaters. Back in my day, we couldn't rely on Yahoo Answerers to do our homework for us; we had to learn the hard way. That's the way it should be.

tina m - not for all questions - like algebra problems

Yahoo ENCOURAGES kids and their parents to cheat by devoting an entire section to homework problems.

EXCELLENT suggestion, Sean06!

auntb93 - let's be realistic here, eh? Most of the questions ask specifically: "SOLVE this question/problem/equation" -- and people DO solve it for them. That, per definition, is cheating.

BahamaBlue - You're missing the point. Yahoo Answers facilitates cheating. And if they could find an answer somewhere else, then why don't they? Furthermore, why are new "HW" questions posted every few sections? Can't you (and others) see what's going on?

^^^^ "they" meaning the student, not Yahoo Answers. Sorry for the confusion.

It's nice for kids who actually need an answer AND an explanation if they don't understand the question...

but for kids who use it just for the answer, that is cheating.. but you're right there would be no way to end this.

well maybe new rules could be adopted..

a NO ANSWER rule..
giving answers under "homework help" should be abuse.

Believe it or not, there is actual research showing homework does not help students overall. It actually has a demotivating effect.

There is also loads of research showing that you learn a great deal from worked solutions to problems. Even more than letting students solely struggle with problems without any feedback.

I feel like these kids are learning from this site. I don't know if you remember but usually kids are given dozens of rote problems to work on at home. The kids here are usually just posting about one or two problems, and I think it helps them work out the others on their own.

I understand your pain. On the other hand, many kids don't have parents at home any more to help them and, hey, at least they are making an effort to do the homework. I guess I would rather see a kid make an attempt because he knows he can come on here and get some attention than just give up all together and not do anything. I am a long way past grade school, but I assume that they still give tests and a kid can't "yahoo" his/her way through those.

I am not disagreeing with you, just advocating a different perspective.

On a basic level my answer is yes. Basically my impression is that most of the people; regardless if in grade school, HS or college are just plain lazy.

On the other hand, I don't doubt that there is a portion of kids out there that have no other reliable resources for information. Parent(s) working, no library near by, etc. Although having obvious access to the Internet.....

Also, I am amused, amazed and disgusted by the vast number of simple question with obvious answers that people ask...."what percentage of 100 is 50"? Unbelievable......

Not every kid has a parent around, and as long as a student has tried his best, I have no problem helping out. I think it's up to those of us answering to exercise good judgement, and not allow a child to take advantage or cheat. As to "what we did back in the day..." - quite frankly, who cares? Once upon a time we had to grow our own food, and walk everywhere, and all those other things... change is part of life.

I don't think it's cheating to tell the kid as much as I would if he was my grandchild. I just level the playing field, between those who have good homework help at home and those that do not. I won't do their homework for them, but I'll give them a hint in the right direction toward doing the research. I think that's fair.

If kids are the cheating type BELIEVE me they will find a way to cheat. If not on here, then somwhere else. So dont punish those kids who actually need help and who arent cheaters.

A lot of questions that appear in "Homework Help," appear to be ones where all you have to do is look up the answer.

I don't think shutting it down would make much of a difference. They can do an Internet search and get answers to their questions as well.

Thats the way it should be. . By cheating you arent learning yourself and that will make it hard in the long run :)
