Go to sounds in the control panel and see which ones you can do without, use the drop down menu and set the ones you don't need to none.
Look at the start menu and get rid of it all, they are for quickstarting applications but not necessary, unless you have a calendar as I do which needs to be in the startup menu.
Quicklaunch icons in the system tray where the time is can be sorted through to determine what absolutely has to be there. They all suck up RAM.
Visuals suck up the RAM also. You can turn ones off that you can live without by going to control panel> system properties>advanced tab>then settings under performance. Deselect them one at a time, see what you can live without.
Clear type and fade effects are the most demanding on your processor and graphics card as is show windows contents while dragging.

Defragment your system
Go to My Computer right click on your C: drive and click properties go down and untick Allow indexing service. This will make doing a system search slower but speed up your computer. When you do this it will begin to undo the indexing service and a few things will not be able to be taken off the indexing but that's ok just click yes to all when it comes up, the box will disappear when it is done.
You can optimise start up by defragmenting the start up files by opening the RUN dialogue box and typing defrag c: -b and clilcking enter
A black dos box will pop up and it will go away when it is finished.
Windows tweaks are available at www.tweakxp.com
www.pcnineoneone.com has a good section on boosting systems performance
www.extremetech.com have some advanced system tweaks
I hope this helps.

Don't believe the software programs, they usually eat up more RAM than they're saving. Trust me, I used one for a year. If you want to save RAM, get a new OS. Linux is good, because Windows does not like Virtual Memory. So it loads everything it can into regular memory. If you're above 15% of your total RAM, everything's allright. The more RAM you're using, the faster some programs will run.

You could overclock it, but according to they way you asked the question, I don't think you'd be able to do it.
