Democritus believed that the atom was the smallest indivisible piece of mater that one could attain. For example he believed that one could divide sand into smaller grains, but even those grains could be broken into smaller grains.

Democritus then believed an "atom" of sand was the smallest piece of sand that could be broken down no further.

Democritus believed that materials could be broken into smaller pieces. However, he said there will come a point beyond which the particles can no longer be divided. He believed that all things in this world were made up of these small particles called atoms.
