Yes and no. They know who there caregiver is. They know the person who feeds and bathes them. They know the person who picks them up when there crying and gives them love.
They don't yet completely understand mama and Dada yet. They tend to develop a deep bond around the age of one.
Some kids might develop it a little sooner but usually at a year old they definitely know who mama is.

Absolutely!
I've read that babies a few days old will be comforted by the smell of their mothers and can tell the difference between the scent of a nursing pad their mother used and someone else's. (They are apparently distressed when someone else's is around.)
I never actually tried this out because I think it's a bit gross, but I CAN tell you that while I normally just walk I got up to a jog today for a few blocks on our hour long walk and when I got to my parents place and tried to nurse my 9-month old she was none too interested because I certainly smelled different than normal!!! (Poor baby!!)

The term "mother" evolves with a babies age. When they are born they reconize mommy by her smell. But an 8month old doesn't remember being born. At 8 months they realize that you are the top person, you are the bomb!! :-)

Yes.. No doubt about it.
My mother has been gone for two years..but once and a while I smell someone wearing her perfume and my heart skips a beat. Mom's presence is know from birth.. its the bonding . But when children are adopted .. the bonding still occurs. the power of mom

I am pretty sure that they know who is in their life daily but probably don't understand what the meaning of mother or anyone else is for that fact, they just look to their care giver as the one that they love, --- their mother

If the mother has taken care of the baby on a regular basis it certainly does know it's mother!

after birth babies come to recognise the smell that you give off and are more contented when they can smell you, but by 8 months old a baby can visually recognise you as their primary caregiver (and even their father, if they see them alot) when they are a little older they begin to form a really strong attachment and start to kick up when you leave them.
