Depending on the vehicle, and the code that was set, the check engine light may go off after repair, you may need to disconnect the battery to clear the codes, or the codes may need to be reset using a scanner. Without a year make and model, I can not be more helpful than that!!

On newer cars (my 1998 and 1999), the computer is always doing tests if it can. It will correct the light if the proper tests run correctly.
The problem is getting it to run the right test. There are 4 or 5 or 6 (maybe more now) tests that have to run and each has its own "drive cycle". Some require starting cold and running to warm up, some require running at over 45 mph for some number of minutes, some require stop and go driving. Your owner's manual may describe them.
It is better to go to AutoZone and have them clear it. Of course, if you didn't fix the problem, you won't get the light to come back on until it runs the test that tests the bad part.
Hope this helps.

It depends on the model of your car. Some car needs a reset to make the light be switched off. Some just automatically switches off after proper service. My last car not only required resetting after service, it required resetting the oil warning light after an all change. I don't drive that anymore. I bought myself a new car.
