Seems an 'emo' is short for 'emotional' which had to do with some underground 'screaming crying' music that started up in the early 90's.
Now it's a trend complete with distinct clothing. They look something like what I used to call a 'dweeb'.
Short pants, skinny on the leg, boots or high-top sneakers, too-small blazer with one button done up, black dyed hair that hangs in the eyes. The boys sometimes wear makeup and they look, well, fairly depressed on the usual.
Goths, on the other hand, I think of as 'vampire-lovers'. Black garb from head to toe, long black overcoats or trenches, thick soled platform black boots with lots of laces. Black hand-to-elbow bands. White makeup, black lipstick or blood red. Hair usually died red or black.
Basically it's just a style of music/dress that certain kids identify with and feel show their current personalities. Similar to the mohawk sportin' kids or the gangsta guys with bandana's over their eyes and pants around their ankles.

emo is a state of being, it means emotional. it has nothing to do with clothing or music. kids twisted it around. they think tight pants, long hair in the front short in the back, bows in the hair means emo, it doesn't. it just means they are dressing in current new age punk style. emo = emotional. goth on the other hand are the kids who sulk in suicidal thought, or just don't want to be known. goth people like dark depressing things that's just how they are. they do have happy thoughts and do talk but they don't want the world to know that.

my sister in laws said imo means like stupid but goth is just a form of style like music and clothing.
