It's just another type of body modification, that has been around for thousands of years in different tribal cultures. You can get professionally branded at some tattoo shops, and its safe, hygienic and can produce some very unique results.Home branding, although done, is not recommended.Just like home tattooing and home piercing it is not safe and you could be left with infection,cross contamination and bad scarring.
Branding looks different on different types of skin, and is somewhat painful. When it heals, the scar tissue spreads out so fine lines and intricate details can be lost. It should be done by a professional in a clean, hygenic shop.
People fear this type of body modification, because its taboo in our culture, but like earlobe stretching, in other countries, this would be the cultural norm.
Most things start off as taboo, untill they become more mainstream in our society . Look at male ear piercing 50 years ago.Look at how widely accepted tattoos are now?

They're not harming anyone but themselves so they shouldn't have to put up with people who don't have enough of a vocabulary to think of a word other than "stupid" to describe the practice. Same goes for people who can't figure out the difference between "they're" and "their."
I'm not into branding but I used to have a lot of piercings. People who look down on either one generally make for boring conversation anyway so repelling them by being a "deviant" worked perfectly for me.

Are you planning on doing it yourself? I do not agree with pain to alter one's appearance for reasons of fetishes. I do not support branding animals or anything, especially human beings.

I think people should do whatever they want with their own bodies. If you aren't hurting anyone else, do what you want. If you want to sit in a bathtub full of blueberries, branding yourself with hot piece of metal, while listening to Christian rock...who am I to judge?

Absolutely crazy. Everyone has a way of making themselves happy,but this style I will pass on.
