A horsepower is defined as 550 ft-lb/sec. This is the product of force and velocity. For a man to generate power, he should use his largest muscles, namely the leg muscles. Cycling or stair climbing are good ways to maximize power. Consider a 180 pound man climbing stairs. If he climbs a 10 foot flight of stairs in ten seconds (a pretty reasonable rate) he is lifting his 180 pound weight at a rate of 1 ft/sec. Multiplying force and velocity gives 180 ft-lb/sec or 1/3 hp. Based on this, the answer is 3 men.

Power is defined as work/time, so the way to maximize power is by doing a lot of work in a short amount of time.

A human is capable of generating 1-2 horsepower over very short periods of time, sprinting up a flight of stairs for example, because they are doing a large amount of work in a very short time. The only problem is that the longer they run, the slower they go due to fatigue. This decreases their horsepower rating.

Thre men are enough to create 1 horsepower, because a man on his own creates 0.372 horsepower.

1 man can SUSTAIN about 0.1 hp indefinitely, so that means 10 men, can sustain 1 hp indefinitely, not short bursts. humans can produce 1.2 hp, BRIEFLY. so in a machine/working scenario, like building the pyramids, it would take 10 men to produce 1hp...thats what i found. but all my life, in school, and in books, before this, i have always been taught 7 men = 1hp, that has always been the standard, or average
