It depends on what you want to do. Overall, Warriors are the best type of monster in Yu-Gi-Oh. Why? Most of them are 4 stars or lower and give you more bang for your buck. Plus many of the staple Warriors are more easily available thanks to Dark Beginnings and Dark Revalations.

Star players: Marauding Captain, Blade Knight, Don Zaloog, D.D. Warrior Lady, Exiled Force, and Command Knight.

Second would be Fiends. Fiends have the advantage of high ATKs and killer effects. The Dark World monsters are currently the most popular Fiends. Archfiends are ok but need their own deck to work well.

Star players: Dark Necrofear, Summoned Skull(he's so cute!!), Dark Ruler Ha Des, Goldd, Wu-Lord of Dark World; Raviel, Lord of Phantasms; Sangan, and Giant Orc.

Third is Zombies. Zombies are all about speed and control. They help you maintain a constant field presence while punishing your opponent with attacks.

Star players: Pyramid Turtle, Vampire Lord, Ryu Kokki, Des Lacooda, Spirit Reaper, and Giant Rat. Giant Rat isn't a Zombie but since many Zombies are Earth monsters they're a great help.

Fourth are Beasts. Beasts are all aggro. They trample over your defense position monsters and deal you damage.

Star players: Bazoo the Soul-Eater, Berserk Gorilla, Enraged Battle Ox, Chiron the Mage, Manticore of Darkness, and Master of Oz.

I agree with bigj9789, mahines are great. They make for excellent one turn kill conditions when used with power bond and the Cyber dragon fusion cards. And the cost will decrease with the release of the Cyber Dragon collector tin. Also warriors are a strong approach, with the capability of Reinforcement of the Army to search for an effect monster for almost any situation. I ran a warrior type deck just for fun and came a very close second out of around 30 players the other week.

If you're asking, what type of monster to build a deck around, then I would say machines. They've really added a great deal of monsters and support to their lineup. They have Cyber Dragons, Cyber Phoenix, Dekoichi the Battlechanted Locomotive, and even Chimeratech Over Dragon. They're going to see a lot of play at Shonen Jump Championships as well as other tournaments. Well, hope this helps and good luck.

Summoned Skull cute, Cynthia? I'm just kidding. Anyways, they are right, it depends on what type of monster you want to build around. I have a deck that is a Zombie/Fiend Hybrid with Vampire Genesis (Summoned via Vampire Lord) and Dark Necrofear and they are pretty good. I also have deck that build around the Attribute-specific monsters - FIRE and WATER

I play mostly warriors and spellcasters
most of them are best when it comes to effects
some goes through their def
some negates trap/magic cards

But i play warriors more often when i found this card
Mystic swordsman Lv4
Att 1900 Def 1600

cant normal summon though but flip summon
the effect is that when it attacks
a set down defence position monster
it automatically discards the opposing monster
and sends to the graveyard w/o applying the effect
of the destroyed card OR applying damage calculation

since i found that card i always win
takes out fun though

Make a monarch/remove deck. Caius, raiza. and mobius are the best monarchs to use. Add a prime material dragon to protect your monsters. For the remove part, add 2 gren maju de eiza, i think, 2 necrofaces, 1 soul absorbtion, the d.d. warrior trio, and other cards that remove cards from play.
