As long as everyone knows what they mean, it doesn' t really matter which color means what. If in one town red meant stop, and in the next, red meant go, we'd be seeing a lot of traffic accidents.

Without looking up early American history on redlights or English historyu on them I would say it is because red has always (in most all cultures ) represented danger, and green represented the pleasant safety of the environment. Green trees, the welcome of spring so green, green waters running free , green forest which met many a traveler long ago.
Green has always represented things nice.
Red Coats in the Revolution represented danger to the man wearing it, while the green or blue of the colonist were of free men and women.

Good question.

There has been various theories. Red is the colour of energy, risk, bravery, adrenaline etc.......Red makes us energised whilst Green is supposed to calm us down.
Some people argue that a red sign should then really mean : go ! and Green : Calm down now.....(calmness..feeling at ease..etc..the colour they use in hospitals which makes me all fidgety on the contrary :-)..

But then the colour red attracts the eye more.......I think people noticed red more than they do green. There has to be an outstanding colour to make us - some of us - stop at stop signs, traffic lights.

Green could then mean.......go but "calmly" ?

red sort of the 'fierce' color. that's why most od the 'warning' or 'danger' sign was red in color. so, u always alert on red.
green is 'soothing' and u feel calm compared to red.

but then again, i guess we better find out who's the inventor for the traffic light and ask how did he come about to put the colors in the traffic light.

Red catches your attention, it is the same color as blood and we associate that color with danger and paying special caution. Green is a color that means growth, freedom and renewal, ( which is also why people associate it with being horny and jealous when we DON'T have it)

Funny isn't it? No matter who we are, or how important we feel we are...we are all controlled by a series of colors in a light system telling us what to do. Life is truly amusing when you think about it.
