I don't know what kind of pool you have. How old is it? If it's a regular in-ground pool, then I would be careful draining it. Not speaking from experience, but i've heard that if its old, it could crack. You see the water has been keeping a steady pressure on the walls. Call a pool maintenance company and ask. Then again, they will probably want to give you their sales pitch. Then again again, they might save you alot of time and expense. As far as filling it up, call the fire department and see if they can help. If you are in an area that charges by the gallon, then get your wallet ready.

don't let it sit empty, very long (all day or over night). Make sure you DON"T empty it after a nice rain. ground water could cause it to lift or push in. If you lay a long enough hose in the bottom and over the edge to an area lower than the pool, it will eventually drain. I would put a 1/2 horse power sump pump in and drain it. The sooner you fill it back at least quarter full the better.
