That's easy . . . the leaders in the American colonies were the second and third sons of important families who were sent abroad to seek their fortunes, as the first son was the only one allowed to inherit in British laws of primogeniture.

So, when Britain taxed the increasingly richer colonists, they rose up and revolted, in a brother-against-brother type of conflict. They won because Benjamin Franklin convinced the French crown to subsidize the effort and send troops also, but not to require the new nation to be a colony of France.
