My daughter is 6 weeks old, and at bedtime tonight, I tried to sing her to sleep while she was in her bed. She was fussy, but she often is right before she goes to sleep whether I am holding her or not. Finally, I picked her up, and she settled down and was asleep in 10 seconds (no exaggeration). Did she not understand that my voice meant I was nearby? I do not believe in letting a baby "cry it out" at 6 weeks old, so if she didn't understand then I don't want to try that again for awhile. I don't know if she thought I was gone or if she just needed some cuddling.

You're right in saying 6 weeks is too young to cry it out... and besides isn't the urge just irresistable to pick her up and rock her??

Anyways, she recognizes your voice true, but it could have been she wanted your warmth, or your smell. And well, if it only took 10 seconds, it was well worth picking her up.

Good luck with her... give her lots of love.

She probably needed to be cuddled. She could hear your voice, but she is still accustomed to being held tight (womb). It's your call whether you want to let her cry it out.
Babies also don't understand that something (including mom) is there if they can't see it. The concept of "object permanence" doesn't come until she's older.

Crying can mean a lot of things. It can mean she is tired, upset, hungry, etc. I think she knows you are there. They sometimes feel more comfortable when being held or wrapped up in a blanket.

There is research showing even newborn infants have some basic understanding of spatial and causal relationships. See for example Elizabeth Spelke and Leslie B. Cohen.

my son was real fussy when he was out of the nursery and spent first night with me. i just said "sshhh" and told him im his mom in low voice while cuddling him. he wasn't exactly quiet after that, but his crying was considerably reduced, and i think he could identify me from people in the hospital by the mere sound of my voice. he's just a day-old then.

babies are really nice to have!

Congrats on your new baby!
She probably wanted to be held. She may have been cold or lonely and wanted your attention. Remember, you held her for 9 months! You are her securtiy! Right now, she does not understand she is a separate being from you.

Congratulations. I had a precious girl too.

She needs cuddling. She's still a newborn, don't let her cry too much.
