In a sentence, accretion theory is the theory of how planets formed from collisions between particles in the early solar system.

Is it the same as the nebular theory? I've not heard of the accretionary theory, but I do know that there were a few hypotheses kicking around about the origin of the Solar System for some time. The nebular theory is the one currently accepted, though, and the only one I've ever learned about. Try a search on wikipedia.

accretion means building up slowly bit by bit...

i have heard the term only in context with the origin of the moon, though.

it says that the moon formed out of lots of little pieces of cosmic debris that came into earths gravitational pull by chance, and then crashed into t he moon sooner or later, adding to its mass.
this was possible because the early solar system was a wild place... with lots of little and not so little pieces of rock and ice flying around.all over the place in random ways... they have since left the system, or crashed into the planets... or the growing moon in this case...
or assumed orderly orbits like the asteroid belt and the oort cloud, which is why the moon doesnt grow in that way any more...
this theory is opposing the other popular theory about the origin of the moon, called the big impact theory, according to which the main mass of the moon was ripped out of earth itself by a near collision with another celestial body of roughly the same size as itself... or rather as it is today.

Think of it this way.....

Put some dirt into a glass of water and stir it well.

You now have a universe. The dirt will settle toward the bottom, due to gravity. Same for a planet, except a planet will create its own gravity, which will increase as more material falls into it.

This is a real rough example, I'm sure there are better descriptions, but that'll get you the basic idea.
