I fell asleep reading this book and it closed upon my thumb. the sheer weight of the book cut off circulation to the thumb and i lost feeling in about a quarter of the thumb for about 6 months.

First, it's not a 'book' but a poem.
It is an epic poem about life and times in Asia Minor in some far away millenium BC.
I think it's great storytelling, much better than the old or new testament as far as myths go.

An epic, ancient work that stands the test of time. One of the very few older works that remains enjoyable even through translation and being written down instead of being properly spoken/sung.
Also, it's always cool to have a hero who can think.

First of all it is technically an "epic poem", not a book.
It is a hard read, but you must get through it. I think it is a requirement for high school students.
