i formatted my hard drive and reinstalled winxp and it wouldnt work

this is what it says: Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer.

the dvd player came with my computer, why do i need to buy software??

I think what your after is DRIVERS. The drivers SHOULD have been re-installed along with everything else when you re-installed win xp. Check in your device manager and see if the drive is listed there. If it is, un-install it and reboot. This should re-install the drivers. If not, there is another problem, re-install win xp again. Some files may have been corrupted.

It's not the hardware that needs the decoder, you have to buy the software. I just went thru this and you aren't going to find a free decoder anywhere online.

Buy one. Click the link on Media Player and pick one to buy.
