Many believe that there is an addiction to sex, just as there can be addictions to other things.

The Problem: If one is using pornography to such a degree that it is interfering with different aspect of ones life (money, job, relationships, legal problems, conflict with values). These behaviors lead to feelings of guilt and shame (which fuels the addictive cycle), worsening of consequences over time (as the bahaviors can demand more and more of a person's energy and resources), isolation, and, in many instances, suicide.

Addiction to pornography is just one variant of sex addiction. People can also be addicted to having anonymous sex, cruising, habitual use of prostitutes, webcam sex......the list is legion. It is not uncommon to have problems with more than one of these issues, as well as with alcohol, compulsive debting/spending or gambling as well.

The Solution: There are 12 Step groups that address the issue of sex addiction, though none that I am aware of that address the issue of pornography addiction specifically. That is because there are common threads that can run across all facets of sex addiction.

There are three that I am aware of:
Sex Addicts Anonymous (S.A.A.)
Sexual Compulsives Anonymous (S.C.A.)
Sexalolics Anonymous (S.A.)

All are based on the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. You can find them through contacting the Central Office of Alcoholics Anonymous, or through searching on the web for each group.

All are confidential, as anonymity is a cornerstone of twelve step recovery.

There are also groups available for family members or loved ones of those who are addicted to sex, based on the Al Anon model.

There are more intensive treatment programs for sexual addiction, though I am not as familiar with these.

The important thing for people to be aware of is that there is help out there, and that they are not alone.

Addiction to pornography can be caused by many things. If you or someone you love has an addiction to pornography, check out these books: Treating Pornography Addiction: The Essential Tools for Recovery (by Kevin B. Skinner Ph.D.) and In the Shadows of The Net: Breaking Free of Compulsive Online Sexual Behaviors (by Patrick Carnes Ph.D.)

Cure!?!?!? There isnt any, really. My hubby looks at porn alot and I think he is sick. That is why we sleep seperate. He THINKS it is because I " like my space". I do. Without him in it. Anyhow,I like the phychiatrist's answer too. Cause?? " Because dad looked at it" is what I hear. Prevention, haha. There is none. Boys will look at it no matter what,or I should say, anyone will look at it no matter what. It isn't just men who look at it,anymore. I don't, but I will be a hypocrite when I make my next comment: I would look at Leo Dicaprio, nude,if I had the oppertunity to so do. So,that would be porno? prolly. But only him!!!! ONLY Leo! I think that sex addiction is one of the hardest to "cure" because sex is a natural function, like peeing, pooping, breathing. And while those are needful bodily functions,so is sex. True, one CAN learn to live without sex, ( why ??) but porn is different than sex addiction. Porn = fake ppl, fake sex lives, ect. and sex addiction is--- sex addiction. I don't know about sex addiction,it isn't something I have learned of. Some ppl feel a rush while looking at/watching/reading porn. If ppl didn't watch/read/look at porn, there wouldn't be ppl writing/shooting,filming it.

The inability to function without a bit of porn. If you need to look at a perv book before you look at your woman to have sex you have a problem. Cause being led to believe people like to do it like that.
Cure wean yourself off it maybe check out real life people instead.

The human race seems to love porn, but everyone claims that they do not like it. Who is buying all the porn: 4 or 5 pervs? Don't worry about it, you will grow out of it like most things.
