A percentage is another way of expressing a fraction. So you have 45/360, which means you divide 45 by 360. You come up with .125. Multiply that number by 100 to get the percentage, which is 12.5%

let a=the percentage we want to find

45=a/100(360)
45(100)=360a
4500=360a
rewrite the equation so that 'a' would be at the left to make it easier
360a=4500
a=4500/360
a=12.5

therefore, 45 is 12.5% of 360

Here is an easy way to do most % problems.
Write two equal fractions. On top of the first, put the % if you know it, if not put x.
On the bottom of the first, put 100.

On the bottom of the second, put the total (the number after "of") if you know it, otherwise put x.

On the top of the second, put the remaining number, the part (if you don't know it put x).

Then cross multiply.

Here, x/100 = 45/360

360x = 4500

x = 4500/360 = 12.5 %

12.5%.

But if you have to show your work, to determine the percentage of something, you'll need to divide the new number (in this case 45) by the old number (360). You'll get 0.125. To get a percentage, all you need to do is multiply that by 100.

For example, 10 is 10% of 100. If you divide 10 by 100, you get 0.10. Multiply that by 100 and you get 10%.
