I asked a similar question and here was the answer I found most helpful. I give the credit to nightevisions. Hope it helps you too.
It helps to have a relaxing routine before bed. Do something calming. Whatever that might be for you... a warm bath, a hot cup of tea, reading a book...
If you lie there awake when you go to bed, occupy your mind in a non distressing way. Recite a childhood fairytale such as the 3 Bears... and when your mind starts to wander to everyday worries, pull it firmly back to the story... you'll fall asleep before you get past the porridge!

I had the same problem and I purchased a sound machine, I love to listen to the waves crashing into the shore over and over it brings back good child hood memories. The one I purchased has 6 or 8 different sounds to choose from, some are, the ocean, rain, heart beat, babbling brook and I can't remember the others (I only listen to the ocean). I hope it will help you.
Take note, it took me 3 days before I could fall asleep with the machine running, after that I can't hardly sleep without it unless I am throughly exhausted.
Good Luck

Try earphones. Listen to the radio. Some 70's music. In a cold dark room. A eye mask helps too. That was you are zoned out. Sleep time tea is great and it really helps me. Then if I can't sleep after the tea about an hour later on shot of vodka and another cup of tea. If that doesn't knock you out go to the doctor

if you are not already doing do so.
1- start an exercise program(light ) especially exercising the limbs, and legs.
Walking is best but lieing on your bed and lifting your legs 15/20 times, and deep knee bends will losen your joints for sleep and gettng up.
Get soem of the cheap hand held dumbbells form walmarts to start off with(5 lb) work with those everynight. it helps no mater how old or young if you are sleepless.
Stretch just before going to bed or getting up every morning, (if you notice animals , even the strongest don't life heavy weights for strength. they walk, run and stretch. without stretch exercise every animal must do most preditors would die, as well as many prey for lack of strength to run down prey or out run preditors). Stretching is one of the best sleep helpers there is.
Than get you a good book you enjoy, and read for about 10 minutes after a nice bath .
Get on a good diet of fruits, veggies, no caffine(caffine is one of the world's leading cause of sleeplessness, among other illnesses) low fat, low carbonated drinks, and smaller amounts so meats.(cut out fat food as it is manufacturedot addict you into fatty diets which restrict goo dhealth and sleep.
If you are old enough sex is also a great relaxer, and will induse a nicer dreamie sleep.

Create a soothing atmosphere, everyones is different. I take Ovaltine and a book to bed, my daughter must have a tv on very low, my son has a wave machine alarm clock and coffee(go figure but it works for him!) Its more about routine.
