Can u calculate the population growth rate??

Question

An island has a population of 25,000 crabs living on its reefy shoreline. Over the last year 10,000 crabs were born, 12,000 were lost through predation. 2,500 migrated elsewhere and 800 migrated in.

Please help im stumped. Could you also show how u got at the answer. 10 points to the best answer out of the first 5 answers. thnx.

I don't know how complex a model your expected to come up with, If I counted correctly you have 3700 less crabs after a years time.

Therefore

(25000 - 3700) = 25000*e^(k*1)

ln(21300/25000 ) = k = -0.160/year

Hi Guy, this is not a big deal. You can do it.

First, how many crabs have you got now on Reefy Island?
That's your starting population.

OK, Add together the number born and the number who arrived by migrating in from some other island Thats your total number of crabs added.

OK, add together the number who were eaten (predation) and the number that migrated away. (There really should be another number for crabs that died that weren't eaten, but they didnt give you that, so forget it!) That gives you the number of crabs lost.

So, compare the number added to the number lost. Did the population increase or decrease? If more were added than lost, then the population went up, right? And vice versa. If more were lost than added, then the population went down, right?

So which was it?

Let's say the population was 25,000 to start, and when you do your math it turns out that the population gained 2,500 crabs. OK, 2500 compared to 25,000 is 10%, right? so the growth rate for this period (whatever period it is, they really should have given you that, too, but whatever!) is 10%.
