I fell and twisted my ankle on Friday morning... although it hurt to walk, I could still walk by limping and I'm sure nothing was broken. Today is Tuesday night so it's been 4 days since.
My question is, is it normal for my foot to stay swollen this long? I can walk fairly well without limping (although slow, of course). But there's this dull ache from my toes to my knee (it doesn't hurt a lot, but it's just there, you know?) Is that normal after almost five days? Also, how long does a swollen foot after a sprained ankle last?

My big toe is a little uncomfortable because of the slight swelling there, but it's not discolored. But thank you for your concern :)

I torn up an ankle and had chronic swelling for over a year, to minimize this remember RICE.
Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation.

If the swelling has not subsided in 4 days time then better get it checked.
It depends on how fast the swelling came to confirm if there is a fracture. If the swelling has shown up within 10 mins and if there is excruciating pain hitting till the head then probably there is a fracture.
So a swelling which has not subsided in 4 days is a matter of concern.

The last time I sprained an ankle, I was on crutches for six weeks. A gel cast for a few months. The swelling lasted for months. It gradually went down with time, but I recall it was months before I could put my shoe back on.
I ended up buying an oversized pair of workboots to wear so I could lose the gel cast and wear something on my feet as it was winter by that time. I think I wore boots for a few years after that. I wore them at first to protect my ankle. Then I wore them because I kind of liked them.
Anyway, when in doubt, get an X-Ray. I went in about 5 days after my injury and the doctor said there was no way my foot wasn't broken. When it wasn't broken, he did X-Rays again just to be sure. Sometimes it can look OK and be broken. It can also look terrible and be OK.

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.
So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.
Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.
A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.
Heal your ankle fully & fast?

Swelling subside generally in a day or two, but not 5 days. And if your foot is still swollen, I would suggest to go and get an xray done, just to be on the safe side. It had happen with my mom and she had a hairline fracture. I hope your feel better soon.

R.I.C.E. - rest, ice, compression, elevation.
The more you stay off of the foot, and do the above, the faster the swelling will do down and it will heal faster.
How long it takes depends on the severity. When you are sitting, keep it elevated, put it on a chair or something. That will help.
You said 5 days, change the ice to heat. This will help speed up the healing process.

Sometimes it can take a long time. When you are advised to elevate, they mean elevate, not getting up every 10 minutes or sitting at your computer posting lol. Elevation, ice , wrap and anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin will do the trick quite rapidly if you do what you are suppose to do
