Gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in 1848- the goldrush happened in 1849. Hence the '49ers. 1868 though? Could have been a secondary rush or a population boom from the civil war- a lot of former slaves, deserters and all around bad guys to headed west at the time to avoid the crap that was going on in the east..

1848 was the start of the gold rush
1846-48 was the Mexican American war
as far as 1868 all I can think of is University of California, Berkeley was Founded in 1868

Well, people were moving west because of the settlement act (people earn land for settleing on if for a certain period of time). The land around the gread plains was running out and hard to farm. The people kept moving west until they hit California, then came the gold rush and lots of people moved west, but gold rush is not the real reason people began to move to California.

I guess because California had begun to be settled and people were always wanting to move west..It had been a long established dream for Americans to reach the Pacific Ocean, so I would think that had something to do with it.
