Tried google. Don't know computer jargon, so I'm lost! Is it Monday, Tuesday or Thursday? That's how crazy I feel!!!!

The situation is: I'm going to visit family in another state. I want to bring my laptop along to show my family how WONDERFUL I am on the computer! I did find a little push-button-thing at the top, above the lighted bar---- it's a little wireless icon with sound-waves on both sides of th e signal-thing. I did find it.
When I press that button----- a popup dialog box appears on the lower right side saying: HP WIRELESS ASSISTANT, WLAN: ON and if I press it again:--- It says: HP WIRELESS ASSISTANT, WLAN: DISABLED.
Now- with my limited computer-brain.....this means that the assistant is notifying me that the local wireless network is either enabled or disabled.
Futher: I want to make sure, ahead of time, that when I leave the state with my laptop.....that I can use the laptop, connect to the internet and be protected. That's my GOAL.
