The best is anything by Asimov, the originator of contemporary Sci-Fi but I personally like the Genesis Wave Series of Star Trek Novels.

Anthony Burgess wrote A Clockwork Orange.

One good answer is More Than Human by Theodore Sturgeon.

Some would suggest Wells' The Time Machine.

But for real kick-*** great science fiction, it's hard to beat The Stars my Destination by Alfred Bester.

There's a lot of great science fiction people just don't read.

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle for sheer allegoric imagination.

I think one of the most interesting Sci-Fi books is Dune. The movie, in my opinion, sucked. But the book is awesome.

I've always felt that "Dune", by Frank Herbert, was the greatest single SCIFI Book. It was so full of original thought on religion, history, sociology, politics, and ecology, that reading the book was like getting a good Liberal Arts education...

Stranger is definitely sci-fi--I mean, come on Heinlen is classic! :) Lots of sci-fi is a bit philosophical, or somehow makes you think about the nature of man/the world--I think that's why I love sci-fi.

The best though....I'm going to say Dune is probably the actual BEST, but my favorite is the Honor Harrington series by David Weber. I just can't get enough!
