Suffering needs not take any part in religion; it is merely the act of inflicting possibly pain to oneself. Suffering also needs not take meaning for the literal sense. Connotations that we use today may also play a role. Suffering can be unbearable to the extent it may result in any form of outlandish behavior or repercussive actions.

Mental suffering is a manifestation of greed and desire emminating from the ego! So it is said in most Buddhist Sutras.

Suffering is wrought from ignorance in what is truth. It keeps us from reaching our spiritual potential by causing pain, anger, sadness, unsuredness, etc, leaving us to pick up and rebuild and continue the long strange trip.
