It's trustworthy. I've been a member for several months with no problems. If you really enjoy the game, I would definately suggest being a member. It's a LOT easier to level, many more things to do, and they give you so much stuff, it's unbelievable. Just make sure you're entering your information at http://www.runescape.com and nowhere else. If you're in the US, it'll be $5 bucks a month ($60/year).
Have fun, and happy playing :)

it is not a scam at all. I know tons of players who are members. It is definitely not a scam. If it turns out to be one, you can always go to your bank and straighten it out.
I do suggest you try it for a month or two before you sign up for a year. The quests in member world and items are so much more interesting and fun than non-members. So much more to do as well. Never a boring moment.

There are a load of Runescape members, my friend was a member once too. There are over 5,000+ members in Runescape, and I know they wouldn't be one if it wasn't safe. Especially since you pay by Paypal which is very safe, I wouldn't be too worried. If you still do not like the idea of putting your credit card, then pay by money order or something. But if you pay by money order it will be $7.95 instead of $5.
Have Fun!!!!!!

It's definently not a scam. You get a lot more content with membership. They are not trying to rip you off.
