for online play? i have no clue. i don't play them.
for console games? there has yet to be a better RPG made than Lufia II for the super nintendo.
final fantasy IV comes close, but Lufia II is easily the best RPG ever made
---------
but let's not only go with my opinion... let's look at http://gamefaqs.com and go to their reviews section and see what the AVERAGE score of some games are...
---------
Final Fantasy VII - (836/85)/10 = 9.835/10
Chrono Trigger - (634/66)/10 = 9.606/10
Phantasy Star IV - (303/32)/10 = 9.469/10
Lufia 2 - (365/39)/10 = 9.359/10
Final Fantasy VI - (545/59)/10 = 9.237/10
Dragon Warrior IV - (187/21)/10 = 8.905/10
---------
it would appear, much to my dismay, that final fantasy VII has come out on top out of the options i chose

I'm afraid my 2 faves are Japanese : FFX and Dark Cloud 2! DC2 never got the recognition it deserved, a kickass game!

For me it'd have to be Diablo 2, Lord of Destruction if you like hack & slash games or Icewind Dale 2 if you want to have to concentrate a bit

I would say Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy x-2. Dragon Quest VIII is good too.
I can't wait until Final Fantasy XII comes out. I know the interface and fight style is totally different but it looks cool.

I agree with Diablo 2 Lod. But the absolute best would have to be Shadowrun for the SNES. Its old but it still sells for $50-60. You can also get it on an emulator. (for free)

Planescape:Torment. The story is so original, branching and involved it puts everything else to shame. It really requires a new way of thinking - you have to die in certain places to actually advance the game, for example.
