he was, basically, an autodidact - that is, someone who educated himself.

He had basic education, but learned the craft on his own.

Since he did attend Oxford high school, I assume he had a formal education of elementary school. Later, as a young adult, he entered the British the Royal Air Force

Of course he did. He did not enjoy it, however. He dropped out of high school in the 11th grade. Then he studied literature independently for a couple years, being tutored by a friend who had graduated from college. Eventually, he took some courses at the University of Mississippi, as a non-degree student. He didn't care much for that either, and dropped out without attending very many classes.
