What will happen and can they attach my social security check?

lore gave you a very good answer, you should follow up on that advice. Hospitals and doctors do hardships for many people. Also, check with the hospital about charities. They generally have listings of different charities that aid people in paying the hospital bills and doc. bills.

No they cannot touch your social security (per federal law), but, they may try to sue. What they can take depends on your states exemptions.

Explain why you can't (out of work, catastrophic medical bills etc). Ask if you can enter an agreement to pay a portion each month. If that doesn't work there are debt consolidators (some are free - check that part first) that know how to negotiate.

Of course you can! That is the advice that financial advisors give to their customers that are in debt.

Each hospital and doctors offices have what they call "hardship claims." If you wualify you dod not have to pay them any money...they write it off and claim it as a loss on their taxes. You must fill out papers at the hospital and doctors office for this type of claim. They use your previous year income to do this.
