a muscle jumping in your abdomen causes it. I am not sure how. they are hard to get rid of sometimes. drinking water, rubbing your stomach to calm it down, or finding something to make you think of other things might help. good luck.

Hiccups are caused by spasms of the diaphragm This involuntary contraction causes your vocal cords to close very briefly, which produces the characteristic sound of a hiccup.

Often, there may be no obvious cause for hiccups. But possible causes include:

Irritation to the nerves that control normal contractions of the diaphragm — such as due to eating hot or spicy foods or drinking carbonated liquids.
Eating a large meal. Hiccups are more likely to occur when your stomach is full.
Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol
Smoking
Sudden excitement or emotional stress
There is no one proven cure for the hiccups. Different things may work at different times and for different people. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the following hiccup remedies may be effective:

Holding your breath
Slowly drinking a cold glass of water
Breathing into a paper bag
Eating a spoonful of sugar
Having someone startle you
Gently massaging the back of the roof of your mouth with a cotton swab for a minute or so
If your hiccups last longer than 48 hours, consult your doctor. In some cases of prolonged hiccups, prescription medications may help.

I had hiccups for 2 days straight. Finally had to go to the hospital it got so bad. Doctor said they're are different causes for them but they cant tell how any one person might have gotten them.
Anyway, they prescribed me some form of muscle relaxant and that cured my chronic hiccups.

Not sure why they happen...I think you either laugh or choke and an air bubble gets stuck ........ but this a sure way to stop em....works EVERY time ~~~You need someone else there to stand behind you and gently but firmly pull down on your earlobes as you have your head tilted back as far as it will go, but are still able to slowly but consistently drink water til you hear the bubble go.....usually 5-8 seconds or 3-4 small gulps. .......My hubby told me this when we first got together, I thought he was nuts....so next time I had the hiccups he did this and it worked !!! So I know it will for you.

Try the cell salt Mag. Phos.(Magnesium Phosphate). It is an anti-spasmodic tissue salt and can work quite well in getting rid of hiccups.

Right below your breastbone is a muscle called the diaphragm. It is attached to your lungs, and when it has spasms, it hiccups, and releases air from your lungs.

To alleviate that, try this old choir trick:

Focus soley on that muscle, like you would any other one in your body. Breathe in slowly and deeply, from your belly button, and concentrate on relaxing that muscle.

It takes practice, but eventually, you will be like me, and either rarely hiccup, or be able to control it quickly (a must when on stage!)

stick a spoon in a glass of water, put the handle of the spoon to your temple and hold your breath and drink for 30 sec.

i was told it was caused by an air bubble stuck between two ribs and that this will stop it.

good luck and try it...it worked for me.

Not sure what causes them. But i've always found that a spoon of vinegar gets rid of them straight away.
