Should I get the brand new (as of today) Video iPod (5.5 gen.) for $299, or a Apple certified refurbished 5gen iPod video for $229, is there a big enough difference in the features?

These prices are in Canadian dollars.

There's absoloutley no difference in them. I have an iPod 60GB (5G) and I've looked up the features and everything, and there's nothing different. Actually, I have read though, that the older models have a longer lasting battery than the brand new iPod videos -- but that's just what I heard. :)

The new IPOD and the refurbished IPOD are going to come with the same one year limited warranty. There is not that big of a difference in the products. If your brand new Ipod was to fail it would be replaced with a refurbished IPOD anyway. Buy the Apple Protection Plan for either

Well yea, its definitely worth the wait to jsut get the 5.5 Gen refurbished as soon as that is possible, because there's a huge difference! The new Apple iPod Video has 6.5 hours of movie battery time as opposed to 4 hours in the older one, it has a 60% brighter screen, which really matters when watching videos. Overall its not worth buying the older one because those are going to depreciate on the market much faster. Goodluck with your iPod!

there is no 299 model... just the "new" 249$ 30gb and the new 80gb 349$ model. and how can you buy refurbished if they just came out less than 24 hours ago?

Go ahead and get you a new one. You don't want the problems someone else was having with theirs to me that's a ripoff. So my advice is to just buy a new one to be safe.
