As u say u can not multiply the sides together as u have mixed units.

4 ft 4 inches = 4 & 4/12 ft (since there are 12 inches in 1 foot)
= 4&1/3 ft
= 4.33 ft
Then when u multiply side and base together your answer will be in square feet.
If the answer is required in square inches then convert the 4ft to inches (4x12=48) then add the 4 inches= 52inches, then do the area calculation.

Change the feet to inches.......12 inches in a foot

Height = 4 x 12 >> Height = 48in

Area of a rectangle or square = base x height >> 48in x 4in= Area

Area = 192 inches or 16 feet

Convert one or the other to the same units...
4in = 4in*ft/12in = 1/3ft
4ft = 4ft*12in/ft = 48in
So..
A = 1/3ft * 4ft = 4/3ft^2
or
A = 48in * 4in = 192in^2

48 * 4 = 192 in^2

or

4/12 = (1/3)
