Well with these equations you won't be able to solve in terms of an actual value -- just another equation.

-x + 6y = 3
add x to both sides
6y = 3 + x
divide both sides by 6
y = (1/6)(3+x)

A = p( 1 + rt)
divide both sides by p
A/p = 1 + rt
subtract 1 from each side
(A/p) - 1 = rt
divide both sides by t
(1/t)(A/p-1)=r

In each case, you must isolate the variable you are solving for on one side of the equation by itself. The basic rule is that whatever you do to one side of the equation, you must do to the other. Take this example:

-2a + 8b = 6 -- solve for b -- First I'll add 2a to both sides. Since 2a +( -2a) = 0

8b = 6 + 2a -- Now I have b as the only variable on the left but I still don't know the value of b. So I'll divide both sides by 8 like this:

(8b)/8 = (6+2a)/8 -- which is equal to:

b = (6 + 2a)/8

Since you have more that one variable here, the answer will be expressed in terms of the second variable, not just a numeric answer. Think of the whole process as a puzzle to be solved. Just keep in mind that what you do to one side must be done to the other.

you must first isolate the variable that you are attempting to solve for, so in both cases begin by dividing until you get the variable on one side alone. -x+6y=3 add x to both sides of the equation- 6y=3+x-- then divide.

add x to the 3 then divide all that by 6 that equals y

divide a by p then your left with 1+rt subtract 1 then divide all by t
