When I turn it on, it makes a quiet buzzing sound (as if the motor is stuck).

There are 2 ways to fix it.
One is to look down, see the nut and attach a socket to it and turn it.
The other (my favorite) is to stick a broom handle down and turn the blade.
Do it with the switch turned off. After you free it then run it with some water.

Usually they are jammed with something like a orange seed STEP 1 with the disposal off get a wooden spoon stick it down in there and turn it untill it frees. STEP 2 under the sink on the disposal there is a small square button push it back in it has probably tripped. turn it on STEP 3 smack wife in the back of her head. STEP 4 --RUN LIKE HELL!!

yeah the exact same thing hapened to me awhile back and I called my ex father in law who is a GE service repairman. He told me to first pull out the rubber thingy. Then (while turned off) stick a broom handle in there at an angle and push/turn it really hard. Then take out the broom and see if it turns on. He said it's very commmon to end up with beer bottle caps down in there and that really did the trick. Good luck!

You need a L wrench. It's a small skinny tool shaped like an L. Underneath the disposal there is a slot, put the wrench in the slot and turn it around a few times. It should help.

***My disposal had the same noise and I used the L wrench and it worked just fine afterwards...Jerry

Well, for starters, if you followed Pegs advice you already know that you just dropped the disposal to the floor and probably bent or broke the drains. Everyone else had good answers. If it is humming then it is jammed with something. I had to finally remove mine to get a small piece of metal that was jammed in it. Good Luck.
