(3/4) - (7/12) = (9/12) - (7/12) = (9 - 7)/12 = (2/12) = (1/6)

since 3/4 and 7/12 do not have the same denominator (the bottom number) they can not be taken away from each other as such. The bottoms have to be the same,
So 3/4 is equivalent to 9/12
Note 4x3=12, so 3x3=9
think of it as recutting the pie into more bits
Now the bases r the same we can subtract
9/12 - 7/12 = 2/12 =1/6 (since both top and bottom can be divided by 2, the fraction 2/12 can be reduced to the simpler fraction of 1/6

Just think of pies and slices of pie to make fractions easier.

Have fun
