Find a common denominator and make the fractions have this common denominator:
5/6 X 3/3= 15/18 (By multiplying by 3/3, you are just multiplying by 1. Multiplying by 1 does not change the number.)
1/3 X 6/6 = 6/18
(15-6)/18 = 9/18
reduce...
=1/2

get a common factor between the 3 and 6, which would be 6. now 1/3 will be changed to 2/6, and now you can easily subtract 5/6 by 2/6. the answer is 3/6.

Change it to a problem with common denominators -5/6 -2/6, which will give you 3/6 or 1/2....with fractions, just remember to do the same thing to the top and bottom! Balance

One third is the same as 2/6, so
5/6 - 2/6 = 3/6, which is one half
