I'm about to purchase a desktop PC but I don't know whether to get a DVD writer or a Combo Drive. Is it better to get a DVD writer? And is it advisable to always use the DVD writer as a DVD reader? TNX!!!

It's good to know that u r going to purchase a new PC.

Well 1st of all u need to identifiy ur needs/requirement. DVD writer can be used to backup ur important data & one DVD rom can store 4-6 GB of data. So use ur DVD writer for:
1) Burning data
2) Games,
3) Movie, Songs
4) Bootable O/S.

While u can use a CD for :

1) creating bootable CD (O/S) (like Win 2000 &
XP etc)
2) for games (less than 700 MB)
3) for some important data (less than 700 MB)

I would suggest u to Purchase a DVD writer along with a CD ROM. Bcoz if u are simply going to use ur DVD writer for viewing/reading data then it's useless & also ur DVD wriet's life can go down. Fot that purpose u can use ur CD ROM.

And in this way u don't need to invest a huge money. Also ur DVD & CD ROM will run atleast 1.5-2 year guranteed.

best of luck.

Get a DVD +-RW and either a DVD ROM/CD-RW combo drive or a DVD ROM or get 2 DVD+-RWs. This way you can record from drive to drive, much faster than copying from a DVD burner to the hard drive and then back again. Some situations will be advisable to read and write to the same drive because the optics will be the same. Generally speaking, there is no problem recording from one drive to another. A DVD+-RW will give you much more flexibility. They record all forms of Cds as well as all types DVDs (except for "lightscribe" they require special media and hardware).

I would advice getting both .. one for reading DVDs and CDs, and the other for burning CDs and DVDs ... DVD burning is important .. specially for backing up document files, media files and downloads
