I sold Avon for over six years and did really good at it. I only quit after having my son, but he is older now and I am actually thinking of starting back. My sister started selling Mary Kay a month or two ago.
With Avon your commission depends on your sales until you reach Presidents Club (when you have sold a total cummulative of a set amount - used to be about $3400.00, probably gone up) After you reach PC, you get 40% on regular items, 20% on fixed items like clothing, accessories. Avon offers a wide variety of beauty, skin care, home decor and clothing items in their brochures.
With Mary Kay, you get 50% commission, but like mentioned above, the products are more expensive. You will need to have customers willing to spend the money and keep them coming back. You would also need lots of customers because one of MK selling points is that their products last a few months because you only have to use small amounts and they don't have any other products other than the make-up and skin care.
I have used both products and like them both.

As an Avon rep, I can tell you that if you're looking to have money during the holidays, Avon is the way to go. There are many more products available from Avon (think Christmas gifts). Mary Kay only has makeup & skincare items while Avon has a big variety of products. Also, as someone else stated, the majority of Avon's products cost FAR less than the Mary Kay products so you've got more people who can afford the products & they generally buy more since they can afford more. I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure with Mary Kay the startup fee is no small amount plus you have to keep stock. With Avon, it's only $10 to get started & you never have to keep any stock. We have orders that go in every 2 weeks so your customers just order straight from the book. It really is a good business & it can be a long term money maker if you put enough work into it. It's no get rich quick scheme, but there is definitely money to be made. Also, even if you don't have a decent customer base, it's always nice to get the things you buy already (shampoos, shower gels, deodorants) at a discount. I'm not one of those pushy Avon reps, but I'd be glad to answer any questions you have =)

Mary Kay is more expensive than Avon. Working off commission, I would say that Mary Kay would bring in the most income IF you know people in your area are willing to spend a few extra bucks on makeup. Otherwise, Avon.

I choose Mary Kay. First off, I think Avon's large selection of items is a little overwhelming. I like to be able to focus on a specific line of items. With Mary Kay you purchase products at wholesale which is 50% of the suggested retail price. Therefore, if you sell a product at suggested retail price, you make 50%. You need to buy $200 wholesale of products to get your 50% and once you do, you have your 50% off for 3 consecutive months including the month you purchased in. If you don't purchase another $200 wholesale in products by the 3rd month you are considered inactive. You can become active again when you are ready by putting in another $200 wholesale order. I hope that makes sense, it's hard to explain in writing. Some people in MK choose to have inventory. I choose not to and it has never been a problem for my sales or my customers. So, your initial investment is $100 for the Starter Kit, plus to get your 50% wholesale, another $200. You can choose to have a personal website for (I think) $25 for the first year. Feel free to ask me any other questions you may have, I'm happy to help. It's a tough decision.

They are both very good companies with their own type of products.
Avon has been around longer, and they are cheaper for your clients to purchase, and they have a bigger selection than Mary Kay.
Mary Kay's products are a little bit more pricey then some Avon products, but the quality of their make-up is better than Avon. The make-up from Mary Kay does not clog my pores.
I have used both, and have had friends that sold both. But the cleansing system with foundation that you receive from Mary Kay is actually a good deal.
What type of clients are you targeting? What do your friends and family like?

Mary Kay.
my aunt did it and she sold so much in a year or so that she got this pink car. It was really pretty but looked sort of grandma-ish, but very beautiful.
I think that Mary Kay is better because Avon is cheap stuff that cost 4 and 5 dollars. Mary Kay is upscale and if you go in the right neighborhood and to the right houses you can make some big mulah!

I have a friend who does Avon, and constantly complains there is no support. Mary Kay Ladies seem to do OK though.

Avon is for a younger crowd...when I think of Mary Kay, I think of old ladies in pink cadillacs, with puffy hair. So I vote for Avon!

I like Avon better. I hear more about them than Mary Kay. My step mom only gets her make up and face wash from there and she loves it.
