I only have a drink when dining out or at a party. So I'm not what you call a big drinker. When I do drink, it's usually a mixed drink such as a Margarita, or Sangria. And sometimes a glass of wine. I can barely get one drink down before I start feeling light headed and dizzy. At the same time or shortly after, my heart starts pounding like crazy. This usually take hours before things go back to normal. My family (husband especially) says, "You can't be feeling like that. You've only had one drink. And not even finished at that!" Most times it starts after the second or third sip. Is it all in my head? How can my tolerance be this sensitive?

I am like you. I can't drink even one small glass and my face goes numb and I slur my words. I think it's just a tolerance thing. I go for months and don't drink then I have one small glass and I'm out for the night. If we drank more often, our bodies would begin to tolerate the stuff and probably get better at metabolizing the alcohol. Just drink non-alcoholic beverages....it's easier.

this isn't exactly an answer but i can completely relate to your plight. if i drink even half a light beer, my heart starts to race, my head starts to pound and feels like it's the size of a basketball. my entire head, and sometimes torso and arms becomes red. i never get the magical "buzz" everyone talks about. the more i drink, the worse i feel. i think maybe we're just hyper sensitive?

Have you ever been drunk before? Drinking is like a sport. You've got to train for it. Start with beer, and work your way up. You should enjoy it. At least it won't cost you a lot of money to get the effect.

Its because you don't drink.... The more you do drink the more you can drink! If you hardly ever drink your always gonna feel like that cause your body isn't used to alcohol in its system!

Hope this helps!

Because you are casual drinker, your body hasn't built any tolerance to alcohol.
It's not uncommon for someone who doesn't drink to get tipsy during the first drink.

It may have to do with being dehydrated. Your body may be lacking fluids and as soon as you began to drink, your body may absorb it sooooo quickly that you begin to feel drunk or sick as soon as you begin.
