I tried finding the information for you on the website for your state's government, but I could not find any details. You might have to check with your local state police.
I'm guessing, but they may not allow tinting on the driver's or passenger window, because it's a safety risk to police officers when they stop people.

you are only allowed legally to go 35%, but i have 10% and 5% on my car and havent had an trouble with it from the poilce

i dont know about NY but in texas smoked is about it...they like to be able to see in to some degree, so as long as its not limosine tint(mirror)
