It was written by Francis Scott Key after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland, by British ships in Chesapeake Bay during the War of 1812. It was written as a captive on a British Ship on September 13, 1814. On September 16, 1814, he finished the poem at the Indian Queen Hotel, where he was staying, and he entitled it "Defence of Fort McHenry." On September 20 of that same year, both the Baltimore Patriot and The American printed the song, with the note "Tune: Anacreon in Heaven," which meant that it was to be sung to the tune of that song, which is the version of it we hear today.
By a law signed on 3 March 1931 by President Herbert Hoover, "The Star-Spangled Banner" was adopted as the national anthem of the United States.

September 14, 1814. Which means as of two days from now, "The Star Spangled Banner" will be exactly 192 years old. The song's melody is based on the drinking
song "Anacreon in Heaven", written in 1750- making it 256 years old.

Gee, the Star Spangeld Banner is almost as old as the Star Spangeld Banana. If you would learn to spell and to read History, especially American History you wouldn't have to ask such inane questions.
