I am trying to apply to this program that helps out students who want to become high school math teachers. They are asking me for an essay on why i should be admitted into the program. I have no clue how to even start this. Anyone have any good ideas?

If YOU do not know why you want to be a math teacher, how in the world can you expect people on this site to know?? I would imagine you are good in math and have a passion for the subject. I would also assume you love working with young people and helping them learn such an important subject as mathematics. I also imagine you like the job security enjoyed by teachers, and that you are willing to earn a modest wage to be happy in what you are doing, namely teaching. Good luck!!

Chow!!

what they are looking for is someone who can communicate

there are a lot of things that make for a good teacher including relationships with young people, good personal management, a love of the subject, communication skills, being able to work as part of a team etc etc

some of the above they can help train you in but what they tend to look for in prosective teachers is an affinity for young people plus a knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject (in your case maths)

if you get the interview - smile and think before answering and make sure you join in group discussions (as these too are often used to assess your ability to put your point across and how you relate to new people and peers all at the same time)

you may wish to reflect on the fact that it was a time of huge growth for you during your own high school years and you wish to be able to give something back to those exciting young growing people.

another important point is classroom discipline (they wont interview you on this most likely but it is as well to begin thinking how YOu would deal with minor incidents that make up the day to day running of a classroom situation.

if you still cant get going then why not contact a local high school and ask if you can go in and observe for a couple of days just to get a feel of what it is like for a teacher

I write a lot and I'm good at math, but I'd be as stuck as you are with that essay. I probably would finish the essay, but it wouldn't be my best expository writing because, while I was writing it, I'd have been asking myself why I should have to explain myself to some pompous a/s/s who couldn't take my place if his life depended on it. I'd be thinking "If you think you can teach better than I can, Mister County Superintendent, then DO IT. Otherwise, hire me and then stay out of my way."

You want to make sure women catch up with men in this field. You want to make sure the United States becomes competitive once again with European and Asian countries to make sure we don't fall behind in research areas. You want to make sure your students understand the importance of math strategically (latest defensive technologies) Mostly you want to be a part of teaching the most highly educated workforce on the planet to make the U.S.A. the only place companies want to put their headquarters and production facilities. How's that for a start?????

ATA is changing to provide its members what they are telling us they want and need. ATA exists to serve educators and make available to them the services and benefits they desire. Last year, you asked for discounted vacation packages and ATA provided over 2,500 teachers and their families with outstanding 4 & 5 star resorts and vacation venues at drastically reduced rates. Those programs remain available this year. This year, reminding us of the limitations you face in salaries and benefits, you asked for a reduced annual fee to affiliate with ATA. We heard your request and acted accordingly.

Tell them that they should accept you because you have nice jugs and that will motivate the kids to study hard.
