They seem to live in a constant state of terror about their eternal destiny so that they have lost all possibility to live a life of kindness and joy in this life.

Whenever someone accepts a collection of beliefs onto their mind in return for a feeling of belonging & security, that's religion.
What is given up is the mental & emotional freedom to find out anything for yourself, hemmed in by the fear & guilt that lie outside the line of security & belonging that religious groups provide.
J.W. may just sound a little different to someone who is not J.W. but the mindset exists in all religions the same way, IMHO & as far as I have found.

Yes, if you ever have the chance sit down with one and your Bible and see for yourself. I am a Christan and I believe everyone should have a chance. When we sat down and started the Bible lession I had questions, so I asked. She did not know; so she went back and asked her pastor, or what ever they are called. Anyway he told her that she was suppose to believe in what she was told by him and stop going to my house because she was being brain washed into Christianity. She finally stopped going to his church, got saved, and became a Christan herself. I had anotherone sent to my house and she said I knew to much about the Bible to do her any good. What does that mean? I am still learning just like evreyone else. I will died still learning. God bless you and your question, you asked it for someone out here and yourself.

they are no more brainwashed, than anyone else following any other religion.... perhaps their religion may seem a little weird to a non believer... but so does christianity to a muslim... i think you are just a very narrow minded individual who should put a bit more thought into his questions...
