I am fortunate to live in a state that does not have a mandatory helmet law for motorcyclists. I wore a helmet when I first started riding, but on one HOT summer day I tried riding without. Ever since I've prefered riding helmetless and always do. On really hot days I also ride shirtless. The wind in your face, the ability to clearly see and hear what's going on around you and the general sense of freedom make each ride exciting. Something cramming your head into a helmet just can't do for you. Also, it's much cooler on a hot day riding without a helmet. I know many people say your stupid not to wear a helmet, but these are usually people who don't ride, or who do ride but never tried riding helmetless. There's a little more risk riding helmetless, but life sure would be a bore if everything was so safe that all the fun was gone. My advise would be to forget the helmet and enjoy the ride.

This about motorcycles and not bicycles.
OK....I live in New York state where it is the law to wear an approved helmet, but I see some guys wearing liitle more than a "pot" on their head to comply but I'm sure some of these are not DOT approved.
I started riding just when the helmet laws came around.
I personally strongly disagree with the government trying to save my life by forcing me to wear a helmet. I persoannly disagree with the government tellin my MY KIDS have to wear helmets on bicycles. That is the parent's responsiblilty, not the government's.
I personally believe also that the "helmet Lobby" or insurance lobby has their hands in it!! While I'm sure kids get hurt on bikes I don't think that it is a major safety problem requiring the government to step in.
To prove my point...Why aren't car drivers required to wear them? I'll tell you why....we wouldn't put up with it, would we!!!!!
So it isn't in the interest of safety but politics. That's my objection to this.
Now to answer the question. I wear my helmet when riding because I think it is a good idea. But I don't like the government telling me to do it.

Even though it's not safe to ride w/o one, here are some reasons.
All helmets are warm in the summer when it's a 100 degrees outside. the helmet is about 130 to 140 inside on your head.
It feels good to have the wind blowing your hair at slower speeds, around 20-45 mph.
When you go over 65mph, it starts to hurt, that's why people wear a dew rag.

it sounds like most of these answers come from people that do not ride motorcycles. i don't wear a helmet because it is really uncomfrontable.helmets do not fall forward and cover your eyes like some people have stated. helmts actually pull back when the wind catches them, this causes the strap to cut into your neck and your head jerks from side to side, this usually makes you think about how bad your helmet sucks instead of paying attention to the raod and whats going on around you...the catagory we are answering is listed under "motorcycles" ...why is everyone asking stupid questions about bicycles?if you prefer to ride with a helmet, try one of the new carbon fiber models, they are a little more comfortable.

Do you mean while riding a motorcycle? I don't like to wear a helmet for the following reasons: They impede ones vision, they cover ones ears making hard to hear, they are hot, it's my right to splatter my brains on the concrete if I want to. I only wear a helmet because it's the law!

I don't wear a helmet because I find them uncomfortable. I believe a helmet will only save me in a low speed crash. If some soccer mom's SUV pulls out in front of me, I will probably die from internal injuries, not head trauma.
We don't need helmet laws.

I have ridden on a few occasions without a helmet. I was in florida riding on a 30 mph road along the beach. It was pretty hot and it just felt good not to have to wear one. At those slow speeds I felt there was very little danger. I would however, wear one most of the time even if I didnt have to. I just think it should be my decision when I wear one.

someone earlier said that the government should not be controlling what rules parents impose on their children. in this case helmet laws. if it were up to kids, they would not wear helmets. they would not do hw. they would play video games, watch tv, and eat pizza and ice cream all day. children are not capable of making responsible decisions on their own. unfortunately, some adults are not capable either. so we need to have laws and cops.
i don't wear a helmet for myself as much as for my friends and family. plus i don't want my ex to out live me.
i don't want to be a melon head who is dependant on others - even though i am not exactly mr independent.

When I was little I fell off my bike and had to get 30 stitches in my chin. The doctor said if I would have been wearing a helmet it would have been a lot worse because of the plastic clip. He said they might have had to preform surgery to get it out. Since then I haven't worn a helmet.

Helmet laws weaken the genetic pool. People who aren't smart enough to figure out that wearing a helmet makes sense, shouldn't breed....and forcing them to wear one goes against the principle of "natural selection".
Wear should I put my helmet when I don't where it??
