very important ,,, take this to heart and read,,, make sure to take plenty of prenatal vitamins,,, also take 4 mg of folic acid,, every day,,,thats 10x the required daily amount of 400 mcg,,, why you ask,, this will help to lessen the possibility having a child born w/ a neural tube defect such as spina bifida,, take it from a man whos first born child has spina bifida and our child has spina bifida, hydrocephalus, arnold chiari type 2 and is ventilator dependent,, neural tube defects happen w/in the first 28 days of pregnancy as the spine and brain begin to form,,, they form a tube which become,,, the brain stem, spinal cord and vertebrae,, when a neural tube defect is formed the tube does not close,, thus exposing the spine to the outer elements,,, prolonged exposure (as in my daughters case) ,,,leads to paralysis, and other complications such as meningitis and other deadly diseases,,, you must follow up w an OBGYN regularly,, check your Afp levels,, if these levels are elevated this may be a signal to this condition,,, and also dont take pregnancy for granted,, we took all the proper steps for our second child and still w/ her she has one bad kidney,,,, but all else is well and they love each other and we love them and they love us,,, it s difficult sometimes,, but its family,,,, oh by the way my daughter has myelomeningocele,, the most severe type of spina bifida,, its tough but it could be alot worse,,,
