being from Race City U.S.A. Mooresville, N.C., racing is a every day part of life here. in the area there are 85% of the race teams
and suppliers to the motorsports industry. also located in Mooresville is the state of the art NASCAR Technical School that trains not only future employees of the various motorsports industries, but also trains the technicians for the automobiles that are driven everyday, like Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Volvo,B.M.W.,etc.
these companies will sponser future technicians to work for them upon successful graduation. there are also degrees in the various support jobs that surround the motorsport industries,
like design, engine building, marketing, and even how to do a pitstop in less than 13 seconds. the motorsports industry, not only NASCAR, hires these grads because that they have been trained with the most up-to-date technology available.
stock car racing does have it's roots in the back woods of the South and dang proud of it, the sport is only second to N.F.L. in t.v. viewership. the venues that are raced at fill the stands at more than 100,000 plus, more than any football stadium. if you want to compare the money earned by a certain driver and a football or basketball player you will see that there are no 10 million dollar drivers and getting a sign on bounus, they race for their paycheck as well as the team that supports them. as far as this being a "red-neck" sport,,,, the technology that makes that car "go around in circles" is at least, if not , more technical, than throwing a ball or hitting it with a club. get in a race car, heck, go to a local go-kart track, and try to run 100 miles as quickly as you can go, or go to a track where they have a ride-along program see if you can hang on while zipping around the track at at over a 160 plus mph(depends on track) . the jobs that are created by this sport, the tech that goes behind it, this is not a red neck sport. sorry to the poster of this question, maybe i should'nt have looked at some of the answers before i addressed this post.

LOVE watching Nascar! Everyone thinks they could do it because they can drive a car but that's like saying they should be in the NBA because they know how to dribble.

My family and I have enjoyed NASCAR for many years, and love watching it live when we get the chance.
But lately (in the last 2-3 years) I have noticed that it is sort of going the way of wrestling (WWF), grudges, threats, badmouthing.
I realize that there is always some of this in competitive sport, but it just seems like more than normal and a little seedier too.
