Yes because while I dont especially agree with it, to pretend it doesn't happen or that it can be stopped is rediculous. Even if police targeted known areas it would just keep moving. By legalising it it can be regulated, the people involved can be protected by the law, thats for both sides. The prostitutes could have a safe environment to 'work' in so are less likely to be abused and more likely to take such things to the authorities. The clients could also feel safer in the fact that condoms etc can be made available, as well as having the girls reguarly screened for STIs.

As for the moral debate, society would still hold the same views of it, but might actually have to confront it and the reasons why it occurs rather than sweep it under the carpet.

Yes, I think prostitution should be legalized.

If we legalize it we can control it. We can make sure everyone who is in the profession Male or female is clean and has regular check ups. There would be less chances of unwanted pregnancies by prostitutes because they would have access to medical care. There would be a decline in the spreading of aids and other diseases associated with prostitution because everyone would be getting regular check ups and using protection.

We would also be saving lives. How many people are out there right now doing prostitution to make ends meet and are getting beat up and killed? If we make it legal we can stop that.

There are always going to be people out there that are willing to pay a stranger to have sex with them, why not make a Safe environment for consenting adults to do just that. Last time I checked as an Adult I can have sex with any other Consenting adult I want to.

Please, don't give me any religious lines. Your religion my not be my religion. Religion has no place in the discussion, remember, separation of church and state.

I think it should be legalised for the following reasons:

We have had the same antiqued law since 1751.

Prostitution is a fact of life and along with the drug problem it will never go away. The government needs to deal with this issue instead of trying to ignore it.

"Researchers at the Royal Economic Society found that a massive £770 million is spent on prostitution every year. This is far more than the £400 million Britons spend on going to the cinema."

They estimated that legalising prostitution could help the government to raise £250 million a year in extra tax revenue. This money could help the National Health Service, education and other public services.

But the most important reason of making prostitution legal would not be to make money out of the sex workers, but to protect them. There are so many women that work on the streets who are very vulnerable. They need protecting from the dangers they are exposed to on a daily basis from their clients and pimps.

Every person should be entitled to choice. Many of the women on the streets are unfortunately not there of their own accord. If prostitution were to be made legal then women would be free to make their own choices. Some of the workers have pimps who force them onto the streets to make money for themselves.

If women were taken off the streets and put into allocated safe controlled houses in non-residential areas then the pimp problem could be solved. The sex workers would be working in a safe environment and the houses could be run by women for women. The sex workers would be away from children and residents so no one would be exposed to prostitution on a daily basis. At the moment women that work on the streets are in full view of the public and in concentrated areas for example: Kings Cross in London and Manningham Lane in Bradford. Would it not be better for the women to be in safe houses rather than or on the streets?

At the moment sexually transmitted diseases are on the increase and sex workers are very vulnerable. The risk of sexually transmitted diseases could be controlled if brothels were legalised. Testing could be carried out and controlled in the places where people go for commercial sex. The risk of HIV being spread would also but cut down as health workers could visit the brothels, and test the workers and promote safer sex.

If prostitution were to be legalised the police could then use their time to deal with other serious matters. This has worked in many other countries. Prostitution is legal in Holland, and two famous brothels including: The ‘Viper Room’ in Brisbane Australia and ‘The Bunny Ranch’ in Nevada USA are run very successfully. Great Britain should follow these examples. The difference is that in legal brothels the women are treated like human beings but in this country they are treated like outcasts. Why is Britain not willing to approach this problem this way? Instead of the government putting its head in the sand it needs to deal with this problem before it spirals further out of control.

If sex workers wanted to leave the industry they would be offered support into other areas of employment, job training and education.

I think that by legalising prostitution the stigmas attached to this kind of work would be taken away in time.

Yes, it should be legalized.

One, because it can then be taxed and regulated.

Two, with regulation comes strict health standards and checks.

Three, the girls (or guys) can be safe and not be worried about getting a beat down from the Johns because they would be in a safe environment.

Four, it would then free up necessary manpower from law enforcement to go after real crimes.

I'm sure there are more reasons but those are the first ones that came to my head.

Prostitution is one of the oldest trades in the world,it will still be around long after many fads have faded away,it should be legalised, for the safety of the men & woman who use this trade.

I dont think it should be legalized .I think it should have harsher punishment.I think its degrading and causes the spread of diseases.alot of those prostitutes are addicted to drugs and the money helps them support a habit that is going to kill them in the long run if something else doest first.I dont know how they make there money really iw ouldnt pay for something that I could get for free if you know what I mean. Also would anyone want to see anybody that they loved getting involved in that .Not me for sure.

prostitution should be legalised only within brothels....those working on the street is a no no..a controlled environment to be sure hygiene and safety precautions are met
I beleive it should be legal as many men have sexual fantasies or desires that can not be met by their partner and require to be lived out.
secondly i think if there were no prostitutes i believe that the rape crimes would increase.

Yes.

The first reason being that we are a captilist country and it is obvious that there are a number of consumers who want to purchase this "product"

Secondly legalization would lead to regulation. Meaning it cannot be just anywhere, like it is now and practicioners would have the benefits of other people in the workforce like benefits such as healthcare.

Third two or more adults who want to consensual have sex should be allowed to have sex, regardless of their reasons why.

That being said I have never been to one, but I'm still young so you never know.

It happens everyday...I'm not promoting it, but I know (and everyone else does) people that do favors for favors. That's a form of prostitution even if you're "head hunting" or "carpet munching" for some money or some material possession...I just don't want too see prostitutes legally making more money then teachers (LOL)...hey..that already happens!

It should be legalized because it serves a useful function and is impossible to abolish.

Anecdote: A very agitated assistant burst into David Ben-Gurion's office when Israel was still a young nation. The great statesman asked what the problem was. "There are prostitutes in Tel Aviv, Sir," he said. "Oh," said Ben Gurion, "At last we are a nation."
