You should download a free product called "ccleaner" (just google it). It erases tracks pretty well and it's free. Choose the options to overwrite with multiple passes. Also defragment the machine (check for the option in your Windows utilities) and turn if off every now and then to make it harder to recover deleted files.

As for the diary, if it's saved in MS Word maybe you can password protect it, or otherwise check the on-line help of whatever you're using to see if it's possible. Or otherwise at least store it in a folder that is not obvious, like don't put it in My Documents, Desktop or a folder with your name in it.

The answerer below has some good points and other than encryption or using another computer nothing is foolproof (although whomever owns the other computer might see what you're doing). However, the reality is your mom probably does not know the first thing about recovering deleted files or hacking passwords, nor would she want to spend money on it, so the advice in the first paragraph above should suffice.

Some messenger programs DO log the chats. Use Meebo.com no log and you can be on 6 different chat programs at once. (I use it all the time) No installation needed. As for removing history.... In Internet explorer go to tools > internet options > click the clear history button. Also click delete files and cookies. That would cover it if you want to be sneeky. Just hope she didn't install a spying program on the computer, because in that case doing all that is usless. Also know if your use a wireless router in your house, it has a log file that tracks when and where you are.

Use your friends computer...

there are computer programs available to located even deleted data on your computer... even months later... unless you use a very good eraser programmer (and there are a lot of junk ones out there)...

passwords are a joke on PC's...

unless you are using some really good encryption software package like PGP then they can easily be broken...

OH.. and ... If I was your parent... you would not know what I had looked at and what I had not looked at or discovered... until MUCH later!
