I got my last job by applying by mail. I think that for some jobs its better to send a resume and cover letter in a large envelope. My last employer was a school board and I knew that they were highly sought after so only a crisp resume and cover letter in envelope would do. I have no problems going in person if this is the better way. I knew it was before. I guess it depends on the job - I still need some ideas and information here.

Most places, if you go in person you won't get to see a person with hiring authority anyway, you'll just be asked to leave your resume with the HR department or the receptionist.

If it's a very small company, you might actually see someone who has input to the decision-making.

The most recent person I hired sent resume by email, the previous person, by mail. If someone had showed up in person (at our very small facility) I'd have talked to them, but would not have been more or less likely to hire them.

One thing that will knock someone out of my consideration is a sloppy resume, and/or typos.

This is of course just one person's opinion.

Show up - 99% you get through the application process fast and easy
No Show - 99% endless hoping on when to get an appointment with the employer, maybe effective if you have known that the post os very, very urgent.

I think email is fast and they are looked at first because easy to access but I think that in person interviewers can get a better idea of who they are hiring.
