I am only 21 years old and am about to start managing for a pretty large and well- established restaurant in atlanta. Why? I was an enthusiastic server that constantly took initiative. I never waited for instruction. When I saw that something needed to be done...I simply did it. Don't ever wait for your manager to tell you what to attend to. Anticipate the needs of your customers as well. If you are doing your job right, no one (neither customers or other employess) will have the chance to ask somthing of you.

Patience.. I mean let's be honest; being a server is hard. You have to put up with angry and unfavorable customers a lot. The easiest way to make people happy is to have great organizational/ multi tasking skills so you can learn to take care of the fussy tables while still getting orders out quick to your quiter tables. You also have to have patience with the chefs, b/c we tend to be just as fussy as the customers. Waiting can be a fantastic job if you remain light spirited and hard working while UPSELLING every guest.... never ever let them buy the house wine or cheap well drink.. you sell more, you make more and your manager will be happy.

A cheerful smile, always makes me feel more comfortable.
No slamming the dishes down.
Checking on the customer to make sure everything is okay more than 1 time.
Not being to slow.
Do not eat or drink the customers food. I was at a restaurant and the waitress was having a bad day, well anyway she actually drank some of my Long Island Ice Tea. Funny but kinda rude.
Always dress nicely. I don't like waitresses or waiters that don't comb their hair or just look dirty.

Years ago I waited on tables and averaged 30% in tips on my total sales. What makes the best server besides being friendly is never, ever ignore the customer. Acknowledge your customer within 60 seconds of them sitting in your table.
You don't have to go to the table even looking across the room and catching their eye and mouthing be right with you. Most people can handle you being busy, no one likes to be ignored.
Good luck - I made great money

common sense will tell you what makes it good, but if you end up messing up a table in anyway, appologize for it. The shitty server who acts like they are good gets no tip... the shitty server who says sorry the food sucked, i didnt charge you for your drinks... still gets 20%
